Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) are known for their lavender-blue flowers and round floating leaves.  They grow quickly in warm water.  They are a welcome addition to your water garden for their ability to filter out unwanted nutrients.  The flowers only last a day or two but are enjoyable and create a nice feature in you pond.  A great floating plant for creating shade and a hiding place for your fish.  They require water temperatures to be 65 degrees.  If you put them in too early in the spring,  cooler air and cooler water temperatures can cause them to yellow or get black spots on their leaves and possibly die back.

Water Lettuce (Pistia stratiotes), a floating plant that creates a natural filter in your pond while helping to combat algae and green water.  Water lettuce grows like a rosette from a single crown resembling a head of lettuce.  Each leaf may reach up to 12 inches in height and several inches wide and can reach 24 inches in diameter.  They grow best in partial shade, especially in the hotter climates and can tolerate full shade. Water Lettuce will not tolerate cold water.  It prefers water temperatures of 6o degrees and above. If you experience a late Spring freeze in your area, you should protect your Water Lettuce from the cold, by bringing it indoors during the cold spell.

    Lizards Tail

This picture of Lizards tail was taken from my water garden last year. Lizards tail is an attractive plant for your water garden.  It would be a great pond plant to use as a background with small plants in front of it.  It grows in sun to part shade in moist soil or water to 6 inches deep.  Growing to 12-36 inches high with a running spread.  Its blooms last for at least a month during the early summer but even while its not blooming its leaves provide a nice plant for your pond.  It also is a very fragrant plant. Lizard tail is considered a hardy bog plant which will return for you year after year.
